TE 9 –  The Brno City Ring Road – road I/42 and connecting radial roads,

the Traffic Management Center (TMC) a Traffic Information Center (TIC).

Date: 4 October 2023, 8:00–18:00

This large urban ring road around Brno (road I/42) has been under construction since the 1980s, and its circuit is gradually being upgraded and completed. Its Husovice Tunnel was completed in 1998, and in 2013 an extremely difficult section was finished in the northern part of the ring, involving 1.25 km of tunnels under Dobrovského Street. Construction of another challenging section, in the narrow valley of the Svratka River, is currently underway, involving a 247 m long one-sided semi-tunnel and a two-sided semi-tunnel of 90 m. The construction also includes a 500 m long tram tunnel (with 334 m of excavation).

Our visit to the Transport Research Centre, which was established from the Czech part of the Transport Research Institute in 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, will be divided into two parts. The first will be a presentation about the TRC’s activities, and after that we will take a tour of the laboratories. One of the accredited laboratories here is the Transport Infrastructure Laboratory, where the tour will focus on the technologies used for testing fresh and hardened concrete, aggregates, soils, surfaces and the structural layers of road pavement (a unique field of research at the laboratory).
